Into the darkness, to find the light
Where light and shadow converge, Chiaroscuro begins. Funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and created in collaboration with augmented reality software studio Elysium AR, Chiaroscuro is an immersive multimedia experience that blends video, animation, contemporary dance, narrative performance, and augmented reality. Through participation and reflection, audiences are invited to explore the shadow aspects of the self, engaging with life’s inevitable challenges and discovering the resilience, insight, and transformation that can emerge when darkness is met with curiosity rather than fear.
Named after the Italian Renaissance painting technique that uses stark contrasts between light and shadow to create depth and dramatic impact, Chiaroscuro extends this principle beyond the visual into the thematic and experiential. The work explores the dynamic relationship between opposing yet complementary forces, revealing that joy and suffering, strength and vulnerability, hope and fear are not contradictions to be resolved, but essential dimensions of a fully lived life.
At its core, Chiaroscuro is guided by a simple philosophy: darkness is not something to be feared or avoided, but something to be understood. While our instinct may be to run from suffering, uncertainty, and vulnerability, it is through confronting and integrating these experiences that we cultivate resilience, wisdom, and wholeness.
During its initial production phase, Chiaroscuro was invited to participate in the CAPHE (Communities and Artistic Participation in Hybrid Environments) initiative, recognizing its unique blend of technology, performance, and community engagement. The work premiered internationally in Szczecin and Kraków, Poland, before being featured at the Florence XR Festival in Italy. It has since received an enthusiastic response from audiences and attracted academic interest, including ongoing research through Kenyatta University into its engagement with contemporary African-inspired ritual practices.
